What is your role at the Alliance Française?
As Cultural Project Manager at Alliance Française de Kampala, I am responsible for conceptualizing, coordinating, and delivering cultural programs and events. This includes exhibitions, concerts, festivals, artist talks, workshops, and collaborative projects. I work closely with local and international artists, cultural partners, and sponsors to ensure our programming is dynamic, inclusive, and impactful. My role also involves strategic planning, partnership development, and audience engagement.
What are the main objectives of this institution?
Alliance Française de Kampala aims to promote the French language and Francophone cultures while fostering intercultural dialogue. Beyond language instruction, it serves as a vibrant cultural platform that supports artistic creation and encourages exchange between Uganda and the wider Francophone world. Our objective is to create a space where culture becomes a bridge connecting communities, ideas, and creative practices.
How do Francophone cultures converge with local cultures?
Francophone and local cultures converge through collaboration and shared artistic experiences. At Alliance Française, this happens through co-productions, residencies, festivals, and multidisciplinary events that bring together Ugandan and Francophone artists. Music, visual arts, cinema, literature, and performance create opportunities for dialogue and hybrid creativity, allowing both traditions to influence and enrich one another.
What are the main challenges faced by the Alliance Française of Kampala in the field of art and culture?
One of the key challenges is balancing ambitious programming with limited resources while maintaining accessibility for diverse audiences. Another challenge is ensuring sustainability in the arts sector, particularly in supporting emerging artists and experimental projects. We also navigate the evolving expectations of audiences and the need to continuously innovate in how we present and promote culture.
The Alliance Française of Kampala is committed to new technologies and innovation what projects are being developed in this area?
We are increasingly integrating digital tools into our cultural programming. This includes hybrid events that combine physical and online participation, digital promotion strategies, and creative workshops that explore new media. We are also interested in developing projects that incorporate multimedia and interactive elements to enhance audience engagement and broaden access to culture.
How do you think new technologies impact the promotion of art and culture? What challenges and opportunities do they present?
New technologies offer powerful opportunities to expand visibility, reach wider audiences, and experiment with new artistic formats. They allow artists and institutions to connect beyond geographical boundaries and create immersive experiences. However, challenges include digital accessibility gaps and the need for continuous technical adaptation. The key is to use technology strategically as a tool that enhances creativity and connection rather than overshadowing it.
What are your objectives in the field of art and culture for 2026?
In 2026, my objective is to strengthen collaborative programming that highlights both local and Francophone talent. I aim to expand partnerships, support emerging artists, and develop innovative cultural projects that respond to contemporary social and artistic realities. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to a cultural ecosystem that is inclusive, forward-looking, and deeply rooted in exchange and dialogue.
